The Last Blossom

Chapter 2:

As the sun rose early in the morning, Sakura stood there, at the doorway gaping in horror as she surveyed the damage the typhoon had left the next morning.

You could see people laid on the road, sprawling. You could see parts of buildings ripped off by the harsh wind. You could see people mourning for the deceased.

Without thinking, Sakura suddenly joined the mourners. After all, how could her parents have survived? This was the ultimate typhoon. Anyone not in shelter would certainly die. The odds were certainly against her parents. They had been likely not to find shelter.

Friends of Sakura's parents started searching immediately the day after for them. After hours of searching, they had given up. Her parents were not among the survivors, nor the deceased, yet people had classified her parents among the dead.

Anger built up slowly in Sakura.

'' If they are not with the survivors, but they cannot my parents bodies, how would they know for sure the did not survive?,'' Sakura questioned to her aunt, Miki, who was beside her at that time.

Miki frownded and sadly shook her head. Her sister, Sakura's mother, had been her only sister. She knew Sakura wanted to believe they were alive. She knew all hope was gone, though.

Two weeks later....

'' No!,'' Sakura cried in desperation, '' I will not leave my town, my country!''

'' It has been two weeks, Sakura,'' Miki said sounding stressful. It indeed, had been two weeks since the typhoon hit and Miki knew that she could not take care of Sakura forever. Knowing this, Miki secretly sought out friends and family that would take in Sakura. None of them were willing except for a friend in far-away America, who had been an old friend of Miki back when she was young, Sumi Sasaki. After graduating, Sumi left Japan and went to America apparently for better jobs. After that, they lost conact, but Miki managed, as usual.

Sakura knew there was no use in trying to convince her aunt. Once she set her mind on something, she would never let it go until she's satisfied.

'' You'll stay with my old friend and her family,'' Miki continued, '' You did meet her before though, right?'' Sakura nodded. It has been some time since though. She always thought Sumi was nice and kind and..friendly.

'' We'll leave tomorrow morning, early,'' Miki still continued, not noticing Sakura was only half-listening,'' so, you better get ready and pack everything you need. I trust you are old enough to pack for yourself.'' Then Miki thought for a moment as if wondering, then shook her head and walked to her own room to get packed herself.

Some five minutes later, Sakura already had the trunks out and was started to pack everything in them. As she was doing this, for the first time she's every been to her aunt's house, she noticed a tiny picture, enframed with gold outlines with pearl borders on the dresser that she seldom even looked at. Sakura walked closer and squinted her eyes. It was a picture of her mother with her aunt, laughing. Sakura did a quiet gasp. She never saw this picture. Then, something in her mind said to go and take it with her to America. She knew if her aunt knew she was going to take it with her, she would surely forbid her. This was her only chance. Sakura reached out her hand, which was trembling with excitement and carefully grabbed the picture. Then she laid the picture in the first trunk, half-cautious like she was expected her aunt to come any minute now. When Sakura thought she heard her aunt's footsteps, she quickly closed the first trunk. Then she looked out the door way craning her neck. Sakura gave a deep relieved sigh. Her aunt wasn't there. Then Sakura tried to forget about the picture and went back packing.

At dinner time Sakura was a nervous wreck. Her aunt said that she'll examine eack trunk to make sure she has everything. Sakura completely forgot about the picture and thought about it just before dinner. Now it was too late to take the picture out and put it back on it's place, then put it in the trunk again. She knew if her aunt ever saw the picture in her trunk, she'll be cleaning dishes for the rest of her life.

Before it was time to go to bed, the inspection came. Miki kneeled down on the floor and started to open one of the trunks.

'' That's trunk number three,'' Sakura thought.

Soon after opening the trunk, Miki closed it. Then opened trunk number two and four and closed both after them. As Miki's hand eached over to trunk number one which held the picture, Sakura could see herself with beads of sweat, literally. Just as Sakura was ready to apologize to Miki, there was a knock on the door. Miki summoned Sakura to stay where she was and went to answer the door. Miki late came back with a huge bowl of Sakura's favorite food, kuzumochi. Sakura opened her mouth, about to ask for an explaination, but her aunt simply said, '' Courtesy of Hiroshi Matsumoto.''

'' Hiroshi! I should have guessed!,'' Sakura exclaimed, '' but why did he give us kuzumochi?'' Miki grinned sheepily.

'' I told him last night that you were going to America,'' Miki stated, but wasn't paying attention. She was just staring at the kuzumochi, almost drooling with antcipation. Miki smiled happily and gave a nod, which to Sakura meant,'' go ahead, eat. It's for you.'' Sakura greedily took out a spoon and started to eat it wildly. Miki laughed. It was then Sakura realized maybe she should ask her aunt if she would like any, so she asked. Miki politely said no thank-you and said it was about time they should both go to bed.

After lying down, Sakura realized that her aunt never looked in the first trunk, which held the picture. Looking back, Sakura felt guilty. Her aunt had been so nice, letting her eat the kuzumochi by herself. Miki never knew the picture was gone...or did she, but she was simply kind enough not to say anything and let Sakura keep the picture?

Sakura decided she'll just keep the picture to herself. Her aunt must know the picture is missing. She notices everything, even a pencil that had been there before she left, but was gone after she came back.
Sakura smiled. She knew she'll be able to keep the picture of her mother that she loves so much.
